As we get older, harmless brown spots start to appear on our skin. Although it is not necessary to have them removed, many people want age spots removal treatments to improve their appearances.

Seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, and warts are non-cancerous growths that are quite common. Seborrheic keratosis are often confused with solar lentigines / sun spots as they are related. When solar lentigines are untreated, they can develop into scaly brown spots known as flat seborrheic keratosis. These pigmentation can become raised when continued to be left untreated. They appear as flat or slightly raised, and can appear as black, brown or even grey dark spots on the skin. People seeking seborrheic keratosis removal treatment are usually age 40 years and over. They have lighter skin, and have a history of frequent sun exposure or tanning beds.

Age spots occur when there is too much production of melanin, or skin pigment in a localized area. This occurs with skin aging and ultraviolet light exposure. They are usually found on skin that received the most sun exposure. These areas include the face, hands, shoulders, back, and upper forearms.

Although Seborrheic Keratosis may not be painful, it might cause itchiness and become irritated depending on where the age spots or sun spot are located.  There are a variety of treatment options that can be used to remove age spots. Our preferred treatment is to use an ablative laser to remove the raised pigmented skin. One of the lasers we prefer to use is Erbrium Yag instead of a CO2 laser, because there is less risk of developing Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH).  The Erbium Yag laser destroys the growth of the seborrheic keratosis, and the laser also removes the raised dark spot. This treatment reduces bleeding, pain and recovery time and does not cause any scarring as compared to CO2 laser. It will take more than one treatment to treat larger and deeper age spots, however the downtime is not going to be as long as a CO2 laser.
